It’s that time of year. The summer duvet comes off, the winter one comes down from the loft, and it smells a bit like the loft. You think about giving it a wash, look at the washing machine, look back at the duvet, and quietly put it on the bed anyway. You’re not alone. Most home machines simply aren’t big enough for a double or king size duvet, which is exactly why people use our duvet cleaning service. We clean many duvets every month, and that number jumps every autumn and spring when everyone swaps over.
Why Your Duvet Won’t Wash Properly at Home
The problem isn’t effort, it’s space. A duvet needs room to move in the drum so the water and detergent can get right through the filling. In a standard machine it gets jammed in, sits in one position and only the outside layer gets properly washed. Then there’s the drying. Even if you manage to get it wet all the way through, the middle tends to stay damp long after the outside feels dry. Put it back on the bed or in storage like that and you’re asking for a musty smell or worse. We hear it all the time: “the edges were fine but the middle was still soggy.”
How Dirty Does a Duvet Actually Get?
More than most people think. Every night it soaks up sweat, skin flakes and whatever the dog brought in, and the filling holds onto it. Dust mites love it in there too. NHS guidance on reducing dust mites in your home recommends washing bedding, including duvets, regularly at a high temperature where the materials allow. Ibri’s honest take: “Loads of people have never had their duvet cleaned at all, because it won’t fit in their machine. Years of it. Gross.” We also see our fair share of unfortunate stains, and most of them come out.
How Our Duvet Cleaning Service Works
Large-Capacity Machines
We wash every duvet in large-capacity commercial machines, so it has room to move and gets cleaned evenly all the way through. Then it’s dried properly, with no damp centre, before it’s folded and bagged up ready to come back to you.
Every Duvet Type, Care Label First
Synthetic, feather and down, toppers: each one goes on a different setting, and we always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions so nothing gets damaged. The only ones we won’t take are duvets that are already ripped or split. Wash those and the filling ends up everywhere.
Collection or Drop-Off
Duvets go through the same way as your normal laundry. Book a collection from your door, or drop it in yourself at our unit on the Oakmere Trading Estate in Northwich. It’s usually back with you within 24 hours. Have a look at how it works for the full process.
How Often Should You Get a Duvet Cleaned?
We’d say every quarter, in line with the seasons. That’s every time you swap between summer and winter togs, plus once in between. At the very least, get the one going into storage cleaned and dried before it goes in the loft, so it’s fresh when it comes back out. For sheets, covers and pillowcases, our guide on how often to wash bedding and towels covers the rest.
